ABOUT  US

Ethos is an award-winning publication platform built by students in collaboration with HKUMed MEHU.

Our Story

At Ethos, we believe in the power of narrative medicine—the idea that telling and listening to stories is fundamental to understanding the complexities of healthcare. We give voice to the diverse perspectives that shape medical practice in a constantly evolving world. We’re driven by the belief that every story shared has the potential to change the way we perceive and practice healthcare.

Founded as a student-teacher initiative with the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU) at HKUMed, Ethos emerged from the recognition that the foundational principles of ethics are continuously challenged by the rapid advancements in science and medicine.

Our mission is to advocate for the myriad voices at the intersection of narrative medicine, medical ethics, humanities, and law, creating a platform where these crucial conversations can flourish.

The name “Ethos” is inspired by the ancient Greek word, which Aristotle described as the essence of a writer’s character—marked by wisdom, benevolence, and moral integrity. These are represented by the owl.

"I am delighted to see Ethos come to life as a welcoming space to explore and share ideas, arguments, and creative pieces related to medical ethics and health humanities!  Imagined and infused with the passion of a group of medical students in collaboration with MEHU, we may look forward to contributions that focus on the big ethical issues in that confront humankind but as importantly, the day-to-day musings that make us human amidst the clamour of living life.  In so doing, Ethos will undoubtedly come to embody the ethos of our community and play a small part in bringing us all together."

Award-Winning Excellence

Ethos is proud to have been recognized with the Poon Li Wai Hing Award for Student in Medical and Health Sciences Education 2024.
